You have 2 assignments for the Thanksgiving break:
- Read a minimum of a half hour per day and record it in your reading log.
- Do the Character Spotlight assignment. It is 6 paragraphs: 1-introduction, 4-examples, 1-conclusion. The whole assignment is due on Monday November 26 when we return. I will correct it, give it back to you, and get the final version from you the following Monday.
- If you had a modified, easier assignment for the last book report, you may make this assignment easier too by only using 2 example paragraphs instead of 4. There is no penalty for doing the shorter version if you did the shorter version before.
If you lost the assignment paper, here it is again:
Character Spotlight
Choose a character in the book you are currently reading. You will be writing about this character. Consider:
1) A character you find interesting
2) There is quite a bit written about the character
3) The protagonist or antagonist is usually a good choice
The Assignment
1. Write an introductory paragraph that introduces your character. Describe his or her background. What role, or part, does the person play in the story? Your writing should make me interested in this character.
Think: You want to tell why this character is someone that you would like to know, if that is the case. Would you like to be related to them? If the character is a villain, is it somebody that you would be afraid of, or might you think they were “bad news” in real life? (Are they a realistic villain?)
2. Support your idea by giving 4 examples from the story of things that the character says, does, or thinks that makes you want to know them better (or avoid them if they are the bad guy). Use one example for each paragraph.
Paragraph 2-5. Give the first example of a scene or incident from the story. Describe something the character says, does, or thinks that interest you so you want to get to avoid them or to know them better.
Use precise verbs, nouns, and adjectives to paint a clear visual picture in the mind of the reader. You may want to quote from the story.
Do paragraphs 3 & 4 & 5 in the same way.
Use precise verbs, nouns, and adjectives to make a clear visual picture.
3. Conclude your paper with a final paragraph to persuade me that your character is worth knowing. Summarize by using your 4 examples.
