Newsletter for Sept. 20

  • Thank you to everyone who has helped supply our classroom with much-needed copy paper, cleaning wipes, Kleenex, markers, pens, and other supplies. We really appreciate your contributions. Every one of these items helps our class function!
  • We are now four weeks into our school year, and well underway in our learning of the California standards that are set before us. I will be sending home a note with every student this week to let you know how your child is doing, and if any work is missing. Please be sure to ask for it. I’ll post an update on this blog when it goes home.
  • 6th grade students turned in their writing assignment on Friday and I graded them over the weekend. Please sign it and return to me on Tuesday. Several students did not follow the rubric and will need to do the assignment over again. For those students, please turn it in by Wednesday.
  • We still have not received information from every 6th grade student about a commitment for our Yosemite trip, and a few families need us to contact them with more information before they can make a commitment. If you are one of the several people who have sent in a check, we are holding them and will not be depositing them until we know for certain that we will be going
  • A reminder that picture day is on Wednesday. Send in your forms that were passed out today and money if you are purchasing pictures.
  • The librarian sent out reminder sheets with the names of books that were checked out last year but never returned to the school library. We are missing over 800 books! Please find and send in any school library books. Students will be billed for missing books.
  • Photo club starts Wednesday at lunch time. Interested students should bring their lunch to my classroom, and a digital camera if they have one. We will spend a few minutes on tips, and then take pictures. We will have a photo show later in the year.

Newsletter for September 7

  • It was great to see so many of you at Back to School Night last week. Thanks for coming and showing an interest in your child’s education! If you were there and did not get your $25 classroom money, send in a note with your child.
  • The first schedule-planner/reading log was due signed and turned in today. If your child did not turn it in today, please have him/her bring it in tomorrow. This is important and part of the English grade.
  • Everyone should now have an award-winning book or classic book to be reading outside of class (in English). All students will be doing a book report at the end of the month on this book. Students may use this book for the required 30 minutes of English reading per day.
  • If you would like to borrow a CD of the math textbook (5th or 6th) for viewing on your home computer, have your student check one out from me. We have a license to copy the CDs, and it is much easier than carrying the math book home every day.
  • If you can buy us a new computer to donate (tax deductible) to the classroom, or know someone with an employee discount, we could really use some. Our Macs are 10 years old and barely work. Windows machines are welcome.
  • Our next vocabulary quiz will be next Monday or Tuesday.
  • We sent home a survey paper with 6th graders today about the Yosemite trip. We need to know how many people are planning to go, and how you will pay. Please return this survey no later than Friday, because if we are going, we have to hire our bus now, and make a deposit to the Yosemite Institute soon.
  • There will be a 6th grade math quiz on Wednesday on the material we have learned in chapter 1.

Welcome Back to Adelante!

Hello! I am Chris Holm, and this year I will be teaching both a 5th & 6th grade combination class, and a 6th grade class. My subjects are English Language Arts, Literature, Math, & PE. I will be working with Maestra Anna to bring your child a fun, challenging, and rewarding school year. 5th grade students will be studying with Maestro Ramiro for math.

  • To start the year, for my classes your child will need: 3 spiral notebooks, pencils, blue or black pens, eraser, ruler, & scissors.
  • Later in the year you will need 1/4 inch graph paper, math compass, and math protractor. 5th graders should check with Maestro Ramiro for his requirements. I recommend that students bring markers and colored pencils if possible.
  • To help your child be organized, we have ordered planners again this year. They will arrive in a few days.
  • To help your child find the way he or she learns best, we are taking a “multiple intelligences” survey based on the research of Dr. Howard Gardner of Harvard University. I hope to use this information this year to make school work more fun and meaningful to your student.
  • My class has a fun classroom economy simulation, so be sure to read the description papers I’m sending home. Students will need to turn in their “job applications” and letter of recommendation (if required for their job) by Wednesday to get the best jobs.
  • Please turn in the form packet from the office this week. There will be a reward for students who turn everything in by Thursday. Especially look at the free & reduced lunch form, and return it, even if your child never plans to eat at the cafeteria. Adelante receives money for filling this out.
  • Back to school night for us is next Thursday, Sept. 2 at 6:00. See Directora Linda’s newsletter for details. Be sure to come as we will explain about our classes, and also discuss the potential year-end trip to Yosemite! Parents get classroom cash for coming!
  • If you have internet access, you can go to my website and view my newsletters and homework assignments. For the computer savvy, I now have an RSS feed, so you can always be instantly alerted to homework posts and communications!
