6th Grade Spelling and Vocabulary
Week 5

a lot: a casual, slang term for many (notice it is 2 words!)
“I have a lot of stuff in my backpack.”

your: belonging to you
“Your dog is running around the neighborhood digging up flowers.”

you’re: a contraction of the words you & are
“You’re a great soccer player.” (You are a great soccer player.)

foreword: the introduction in the beginning of a book
“In the foreword, the author thanks all of her family members for helping her write the story.” (It has ‘word’ in it, and there are words in books – get it?)

forward: toward the front
“We wanted to move forward, but the storm had washed away the bridge.”

integrity: holding on to moral principles or character; being honest
“He is a person of integrity, and could not cheat on the test.”

nepotism: showing favoritism toward someone because they are a family member
“He got his job by nepotism, and not because he was qualified.”
“I would never work at her company. With all of the nepotism, you will never get promoted and earn a raise.”

timid: not having courage, bravery, or self-assurance; shy
“The new boy was too timid to ask the teacher for help with his math problems.”

exhausted: extremely tired or weary
“After hiking 15 miles, we were so exhausted all we wanted to do was sleep.”

ignore: to intentionally not notice something or someone
“I’m going to ignore the ringing phone so I can eat my dinner.”

although: another way of saying “even though”
Although we spent an hour making the soup, it tasted like dishwater.”

articulate: to be able to put into words
“He couldn’t articulate what he was feeling, so he just hit his brother instead of talking to him.”

Week 4 for Sept. 8-12

according: to cause to agree; to bring into agreement; in agreement with…
“According to the teacher, the we get to go to recess early today.”

persuade: to convince, or make someone believe something
“Did you persuade your father to let you go to Great America?”

device: a thing made for a particular purpose; a word pattern or figure of speech
“Alliteration is a literary device to get the reader’s attention.”

narrator: the person telling the story
“There was a narrator on stage telling the audience what the actors were thinking.”

statement: something said, usually as an assertion
“I agreement with everything you said, except your last statement.”

generalization: to generalize, or ‘be generic’; not specific; to infer from only a few facts
“It’s a generalization that all mice like to eat cheese.”

compare: to examine two or more things for similarities
“If you compare your car with mine, you will see that yours is better.”

contrast: to examine two or more things for differences
“How did camp food contrast with mother’s cooking?”

essay: a short writing on one subject or theme
“The student wrote an essay about her dog.”

transition: changing from one form or style to another
“I liked your essay about your dog, but you need a transition between the paragraph about his friendliness and the tricks he can do.”

algorithm: a particular way of solving a problem
“To divide numbers, you need to use the algorithm of putting the divisor outsideĀ  of the ‘casita.'”

decisive: to decide easily without hesitation; definite; commanding
“A good military man needs to be decisive.”
“My team has a decisive lead in the league standings.”

Spelling and Vocabulary for Week of August 25

achieve: to bring to a successful end or accomplish; to get or gain by effort
“You can achieve an A in this class if you do your homework and study.”

appropriate: suitable or right for a particular purpose; doing the right thing at the right time
“A hammer is the appropriate tool for driving a nail.”

clarify: to make an idea or statement clear; without confusion
“Please clarify what you mean when you say you’re goo-goo.”

conflict: a disagreement, fight, quarrel, struggle, battle
“In Harry Potter, one of the conflicts is between doing what is right, or doing what is easy.”

consistent: holding together; not disagreeing with itself; compatible
“The teacher was consistent and always rewarded good work.”

excerpt: a quotation from a story; a small piece taken out of a larger story
“Please read this 2 paragraph excerpt from the story and answer the question.”

figurative: involving a figure of speech or idiom such as a metaphor; not literal
“Having a ‘heart attack’ is figurative language for heart disease.”

hinder: to prevent something from happening
“Please do not hinder the children from going to the cafeteria.”

phrase: a part of a sentence
“The words ‘because I am tired’ is a phrase, and not a complete sentence.

stanza: a group of lines (sentences) in a poem, often to create a rhythm or meter. Similar to a paragraph
“The poem had 4 lines in every stanza.”

subheading: a small title in the middle of a story to tell you what the section will be about
“I like books with subheadings because it helps me know what the author will say.”

summary: a brief description of the facts or actions of a story
“His summary of the book made me want to read it.”
