Back from Winter Break

Hello students,

Well, it’s been a nice long break, but it’s time to get back to the fun of school, learning new things, and seeing your friends again!

Reminder:

  • You need to have finished your December award-winning or classic book. We will begin working on the big report when we resume.
  • Your reading log for Dec. 12-18 is due on Monday when you return. You do not need to turn in any other reading logs for the break.
  • You have a 15-page math refresher packet assigned by Maestra Rita. It’s not due until Friday Jan. 13, but wisdom suggests you start it now if you haven’t already because you will also have your regular work load when we start again.

I’m looking forward to seeing you all again on Monday!

Hello Students

Hi everyone,

Thank you for your huge get well card! I enjoyed reading everyone’s greeting and good wishes. You really lifted my day and made me feel missed. Linnea gave me the story about the music part of it — it sounded like it was really funny, if it hadn’t been so annoying for everyone. :-)

If things go according to my plans, I’ll be with your next week.

Be well, and keep learning!

Thanksgiving Break

  • Pictures from your Mesopotamian Museum are now posted on my picture page!

You have a little work for the Thanksgiving Break.

Math: I know you did some of these before, but this time, show your work!!

  • pg 602 all problems

  • pg 628 all problems
  • You will review these on Monday, and take a test on Tuesday.

English

  • In December, you will be doing a very big book report for the book you read in November. It will literally take weeks to complete, and be worth 500 points. Be sure you have your November book (any book at your level that the teacher approved) finished by Wed. Nov. 28.

I’ll see you in a week or so after the holiday. Have a great Thanksgiving!

Newsletter for Nov. 21

*    I will be back teaching for this holiday-shortened week. I have really missed your children, and for the past three days I have been at school for a couple of hours just chatting with some of them.
I am healing well from my surgery on October 18, but it will take several more weeks for me to feel more normal and about a year to fully recover from the surgery.
Even though I do not have any more cancer in me that the doctors can find, an unexpected discovery from my surgery was that I will need to have six months of chemotherapy as a preventative measure. My treatment will begin on November 28. At this time I don’t know how the weeks of chemo will affect my body, but my hope is to work at least part time. During my chemo cycles, I’m taking a wild guess that I will be out of school for three days, and then able to work for seven days before starting the next round of chemo. Because this is just a guess, of course it can change at any time, especially if the chemo affects me more over time.
*    We are really lucky to have Lisa and Rita as my substitutes while I am not working. They are being extremely flexible and supportive in being able to come in whenever they are needed. They are both excellent teachers, and we probably wouldn’t come close to getting anyone as consistent from the district. (Some classes at other schools go through as many as five or more long-term substitutes when a teacher is out for most of a school year!)
Before coming to Adelante as a volunteer, Lisa taught fourth-grade for six years in the Las Lomitas School District. Rita grew up in Chile and is a native Spanish speaker. She taught fourth and fifth grades for two years at Fair Oaks School in Redwood City before volunteering at Adelante. Both Lisa and Rita have been paid long and short-term substitutes for me and for other teachers at Adelante for the past several years. I am so grateful for both of them!
*    For this short week, we will be continuing to work on the geometry of circles and complex figures. There will be a test early next week, probably on Tuesday. I will be assigning review problems to work on for over the holiday break.
*    In English we will finish the few oral book reports that still need to be done, and work on getting close to finishing The Dreamer. We will also restart working on our grammar Caught-ya exercises.
*    Maestra Anna tells me that there are some parents who are behind on their payments for the Yosemite trip. Families paying in four installments should have turned in two, and families paying in six installments should have turned in three. Thank you!

¡Gracias!
