* I will be back teaching for this holiday-shortened week. I have really missed your children, and for the past three days I have been at school for a couple of hours just chatting with some of them.
I am healing well from my surgery on October 18, but it will take several more weeks for me to feel more normal and about a year to fully recover from the surgery.
Even though I do not have any more cancer in me that the doctors can find, an unexpected discovery from my surgery was that I will need to have six months of chemotherapy as a preventative measure. My treatment will begin on November 28. At this time I don’t know how the weeks of chemo will affect my body, but my hope is to work at least part time. During my chemo cycles, I’m taking a wild guess that I will be out of school for three days, and then able to work for seven days before starting the next round of chemo. Because this is just a guess, of course it can change at any time, especially if the chemo affects me more over time.
* We are really lucky to have Lisa and Rita as my substitutes while I am not working. They are being extremely flexible and supportive in being able to come in whenever they are needed. They are both excellent teachers, and we probably wouldn’t come close to getting anyone as consistent from the district. (Some classes at other schools go through as many as five or more long-term substitutes when a teacher is out for most of a school year!)
Before coming to Adelante as a volunteer, Lisa taught fourth-grade for six years in the Las Lomitas School District. Rita grew up in Chile and is a native Spanish speaker. She taught fourth and fifth grades for two years at Fair Oaks School in Redwood City before volunteering at Adelante. Both Lisa and Rita have been paid long and short-term substitutes for me and for other teachers at Adelante for the past several years. I am so grateful for both of them!
* For this short week, we will be continuing to work on the geometry of circles and complex figures. There will be a test early next week, probably on Tuesday. I will be assigning review problems to work on for over the holiday break.
* In English we will finish the few oral book reports that still need to be done, and work on getting close to finishing The Dreamer. We will also restart working on our grammar Caught-ya exercises.
* Maestra Anna tells me that there are some parents who are behind on their payments for the Yosemite trip. Families paying in four installments should have turned in two, and families paying in six installments should have turned in three. Thank you!
* Estaré enseñando en Adelante de vuelta para esta semana más corta de vacaciones. Realmente he perdido a sus hijos, y durante los últimos tres días he estado en la escuela por un par de horas charlando con algunos de ellos.
Estoy recuperando bien de la cirugía del 18 de octubre, pero tomará varias semanas más para que me sienta más normal y alrededor de un año para recuperarse completamente de la cirugía.
A pesar de que ya no tengo cáncer en mí que los médicos puedan encontrar, un descubrimiento inesperado de mi cirugía fue que se necesita para tener seis meses de quimioterapia como medida preventiva. Mi tratamiento se iniciará el 28 de noviembre. En este momento no sé cómo las semanas de la quimioterapia van a afectar a mi cuerpo, pero mi deseo es trabajar por lo menos a tiempo parcial. Debido a que esta es sólo una conjetura, entonces puede cambiar en cualquier momento, especialmente si la quimioterapia me afecta más con el paso de tiempo.
* Somos muy afortunados de tener Lisa y Rita, mi sustitutas, mientras que no estoy trabajando. Las dos son muy flexibles en entrar cuando nos necesiten. Ambas son maestras excelentes, y es probable que no podíamos conseguir a alguien como consistente desde el distrito. (Algunas de las clases en otras escuelas pasan por un máximo de cinco o más sustitutos a largo plazo cuando el maestro está fuera por la mayoría de un año escolar!)
Antes de llegar a Adelante como voluntario, Lisa enseñó cuarto grado por seis años en el Distrito Escolar de Las Lomitas. Rita creció en Chile y es un hablante nativo de español. Ella enseñó a los grados cuarto y quinto por dos años en Fair Oaks escuela en Redwood City antes de participar en Adelante. Tanto Lisa y Rita han sido pagados sustitutos a largo y corto plazo para mí y para otros profesores de Adelante de los últimos años. Estoy muy agradecida por las dos!
* Para esta semana corta, nos van a continuar el trabajo en la geometría de círculos y figuras complejas. Habrá una prueba la próxima semana, probablemente en el martes. Voy a hacer la asignación de problemas de repaso para hacer durante las vacaciones.
* En clases de Inglés vamos a terminar los pocos informes orales de libro que todavía hay que hacer, y trabajar en conseguir cerca de terminar El soñador. También se reiniciará a trabajar en los ejercicios gramáticas Atrapado-ya.
* Maestra Anna me dice que hay algunos padres que están atrasados en sus pagos para el viaje de Yosemite. Las familias que pagan en cuatro cuotas ya deben dos, y las familias que pagan en seis cuotas ya deben tres. ¡Gracias!
