Newsletter for January 7

*    Welcome back from our long winter break! I hope everyone is well rested and had an enjoyable time with family. It is good to be back at Adelante and to see everyone again.
*    Thank you very much for the $50 gift card to Cafe La Tartine! My wife and I have already had an enjoyable lunch there, and are looking forward to going back again.
*    We will begin our math where we left off, working in chapter 5 with fractions. We have done good work in catching up, but I have calculated that we are still about 5 days behind where we need to be in order to be ready for state testing. Therefore, I will continue to work the schedule so we cover everything we need to do.
*    We have 5 more math chapters to complete before state testing in April. It will be important for everyone to do their homework and keep on top of their assignments as we have to move quickly to cover everything.
*    The required book for January is “a book from a new genre that you have not reported on yet this year.” This means if your child has done reports on fantasy and realistic fiction this school year, he/she needs to find a new genre to read, such as historical fiction, mystery, science fiction, etc. The book must be at your child’s reading level, but does not have to be an award winner. Talk with the teacher if you or your child is uncertain about the book they have selected.
*    Looking forward, in February students will have to read a biography, and in March, a non-fiction book for their reports. Unfortunately, the Adelante school library does not have many books at the 6th grade level in these categories. Beginning in February, students will be required to visit the public library to get their books for these reports. Please go early in the month so that your child does not fall behind.
*    I only assign work that is critical for meeting state standards, so it is critical for all students to do every assignment. Students who do not turn their work in are required to stay after school on Tuesdays and Fridays until they complete their work. Tomorrow’s group of students who need to stay is posted on my web site.
*    The government is reporting that they expect the flu season to be especially bad this year. I had the flu a few years ago, and it was terrible! It kept me home for two weeks with fever, chills, headache, and weakness. If your child has not had a vaccine yet, please get one this week from your regular provider. The county also offers free vaccines with no identification required.
