Homework for Jan 31 – Feb 6

Feb. 4, 2011

Hello students!

I hope you are all having a good time with our guest teacher Mrs. Deal. We have been talking by phone, and she is letting me know how everything is going. She told me she might even run with you during PE today. Watch out, she’s fast and can outdistance a horse!

I am recovering as expected from my surgery. I am on medicine for the pain that occurs after being cut open, so I am not hurting too much. I’m moving slowly, cannot stand for very long, and the doctor tells me that I can’t lift more than 8 pounds for the next several weeks (or else bad things will happen inside). :-(  However, everything is going as expected, and the doctor is very pleased with my progress only 3 days after surgery.

For people who have makeup work to do like vocabulary builders, get the sheets in class or from the Downloads page, do them now, and put them in my In Box. If you have a makeup test to take, study now while you have the time, and you can take the test when I return. Mrs. Deal or Maestro Ramiro can help you if you don’t understand the concepts. Do this now, because there won’t be much time before the end of the trimester when I get back.

It’s too soon to tell when I will be back, but I’ll update this site after the weekend. You can always use the chat board to talk to me too.

Be well!

– Maestro Chris

Monday evening

  • No math: starting geometry unit with Mrs. Deal tomorrow
  • Finish your January award winning book.
  • Begin your February biography. I suggest you get one at the public library. My favorite people are Ben Franklin and President Theodore Roosevelt. Who is yours?

This site will not be updated with homework while I am away from school. Please copy all homework assignments from the white board every day. Thanks.

Newsletter for Jan. 24

  • Last week the 5th grade students in Maestro Ramiro’s and Maestra Austyn’s class went on a field trip to Stanford to see a hip-hop performance. The volunteer who organized the trip and procured the tickets did not know about the 5th grade students in the combination class, and they were left out by mistake. We apologize to our 5th grade students and families, and are working to find a way to make up a different field trip for them later in the year.
  • The end of the trimester is Feb. 28. Anyone with missing work or tests needs to get it turned in by Feb. 21. Missing work is posted on the board in my classroom by code number, so every student should check to see if they are complete or missing assignments.
  • I will be sending progress reports home this week. Please sign them and have your child return the coupon.
  • We distributed raffle tickets to the 6th grade students on Friday Jan. 21. This is a GREAT WAY for your child to earn money to help pay for their trip to Yosemite, and I suggest that you help your child sell as many as possible to friends, relatives, teammates, etc. All money that your student raises will go to pay for any remaining amount on his or her trip account. (If a student raises over the $535 needed, the additional money will go to help others in need or help pay for the prizes. State law prohibits raffles for personal gain.)
  • Reminder: On Wednesday Feb. 2 there will be a field trip to the Egyptian Museum.
  • The February book requirement is a biography. The school library has a limited selection, so you may want to take your child to the public library to find a full length biography.
  • The test on multiplication facts through 12×12 is on Jan. 31. Please be sure your child knows all of these so we can have an ice cream party!
  • I will be out of school for about a week beginning on Tuesday Feb. 1 for surgery. Lisa Deal has graciously offered to be my substitute teacher while I recover. She is excellent, and I know that our students will be well taught while in her hands. At my direction she will be teaching poetry, small English topics using writing worksheets, and geometry.
  • The room will be closed at lunch-time and after school while I am gone, so students who need extra help should see me this week. I plan to be at school until 3:30 every day (3:00 on Thursday).

Newsletter for January 3, 2011

  • Welcome back to school! I hope you all had a restful vacation break, and are ready to start the second half of the year refreshed and ready!
  • Maestra Anna and I have been working hard going over your benchmark 2 test results to determine what areas to concentrate on in the next several weeks. It will be important to do all of the assignments that we give you so that you can improve and be successful with the California standards.
  • If anyone would like a copy of their benchmark results, just email me and I’ll print them out for you.
  • Four people subscribe to my blog data feed. If you subscribe, you will be able to get instant updates on homework and announcements such as this newsletter instantly. Just go here on my web page and click on the red RSS-Posts link above the search box in the right column on my web page.
  • Do you want more communication? Join the 8 other people on the free yahoo email list. Go to http://groups.yahoo.com/group/AdelanteClass2011 and click on the blue Join this Group! button. You will need a free Yahoo account to join.
  • Watch for information coming soon about a Yosemite trip raffle fund-raising activity. This is your chance to sell raffle tickets and have the money go to pay directly toward your trip account. This is the only activity this year where the student will get to use the money for their own trip. Last year students raised over $4,400 in all for their trips.
  • If you want to go on the Yosemite trip but have not yet told me, let me know now. We can still get you a place before we have to give our final student total to the Yosemite Institute.
  • Finally, the California Truancy law changed on Jan. 1. A student who has 3 unexcused absences in 1 school year is considered truant. (Excused absences are generally only for medical or legally ordered reasons.) If a student misses 10% of the school days (about 1.7 days per month) with unexcused absences, the parents or guardians could face very harsh penalties. The state of California (and we) want all of our students in school!

Homework for the Winter Break

Announcements:

  1. Pictures from the Danny G. dance and our classroom are now posted. Go to the picture page and click on the link!
  2. Monday night there is a full eclipse of the moon. It begins at about 9:33PM, and starts to get really “eaten into’ at 10:38PM. It reaches totality at 11:45PM, and stays totally eclipsed for a long time, until 12:52 AM (early Tues. morning). It’s over between 2-3 AM, depending upon how much darkness you consider an eclipse. Of course, the rain clouds will need to cooperate to allow us to see it…
  3. Tuesday Dec. 21 is the Winter Solstice, the first day of winter and the shortest day of the year. After tomorrow, the days get longer. Yea!

I hope you are all having a great and relaxing holiday. Remember to be safe, and I’ll see you on January 3!

Just so you don’t get too bored, here’s what you need to do:

  • Vocabulary Builder (12 words, completely filled out. Use YOUR OWN sentences for the sentence part; check with an adult if you’re not sure how to use the word, because I’ve seen some pretty weird sentences.)
  • Know all of  your multiplication facts. There’s a party if we get everyone to learn them!
  • Finish your December book that has the protagonist of the opposite gender from you. You do NOT need to fill out reading logs if you get your book finished.
