(Versión en español abajo)

I am very happy to be back to work at school after my recovery from surgery on Oct. 1. I missed working with your children. They gave me a very warm welcome back, which really made me feel appreciated. I love being their teacher.

* On Thursday, the district superintendent came to our School Site Council meeting to tell us that she plans to propose to the school board a change to move our sixth-grade classes to the Kennedy Middle School site beginning next year. The reason is to reduce overcrowding and traffic congestion at Adelante. The board needs to first officially hear this proposal on Nov. 14, and will then vote on it Nov. 28. Whatever happens, it will not affect our classes this school year.
* The school board has also said that if Governor Brown’s Prop. 30 does not pass on Tuesday, they will probably end the school year three weeks early due to a lack of money.
* Since coming back to work, I have determined that we are not as far along in our progress as we need to be in order to be ready for the state STAR tests at the end of April. I believe that we can make this up, but it means that students will be working a little harder, have a little more homework, and sometimes we will have tests on Mondays.
* This year, parent conferences are going to be handled differently, with two days devoted to conferences. Children will stay home these days with no school, and also be out the rest of the week for the Thanksgiving holiday. I welcome and encourage students to attend their conference with their parent.
The conference schedule was passed out today. Conference dates are Nov. 19 & 20, with a few spots on Fri. Nov. 16. Return the schedule as soon as possible to get the time spot you desire. If you absolutely cannot come to school due to a work conflict, we can arrange a telephone conference. Put your phone number in the time slots you desire. You will meet only with your child’s home room teacher unless we feel there is a special need to meet with both teachers.
* Wednesday is the last day for students to retake tests, take makeup tests, or turn in late assignments in order to improve their grades. They can do this during lunch recess or after school.
* In math, we have finished our geometry unit and are now working on algebra, solving one and two-step linear equations. This is a new critical sixth-grade concept. We will return back for more geometry later in the year.
* In English, we have a lot to do. Students are now working on their October book report. The first draft was due today. They have also started reading their November book (any fiction book at their reading level that they haven’t read before). Students are also revising their Tequila Worm essays to correct spelling, punctuation, and grammar errors.
Last week we had our first comprehension and analysis test on the story Grayling from our literature books. We will have many more of these kind of tests in the future. This month we will also be working on vocabulary lists, finishing capitalization rules, and looking at shades of meaning in words.
Please be sure your child is reading at least a half hour a day, and sign their reading log every Sunday so they can return it to me on Monday.

*   *   *

Some things are worth waiting for

Fall Festival is this Friday (hey, it’s alliterative, and a capitalized event)

Dear Parents & Students,

We are trying to put together some kind of year-end trip for the sixth grade. Once I return, Maestra Anna, Directora Linda and I will get together to work it out.

In the meantime, we need to make money for this trip. Last year’s sixth-grade class made $1000 putting on the Haunted House at the Fall Festival. We still need BOTH parents and students to help make this happen. If you’d like to have fun on Friday scaring the pants off of the little kids, please contact TODAY Joseph’s mom Evro or Lucas’ mom Laura who are coordinating this.

The time is about 2:30PM to 7:30PM on this Friday, Oct. 26.

Boo!

– Maestro Chris

===================================================================

Dear Students,

It’s taking longer for me to get better from my surgery than either me or my doctor thought it would. This has been frustrating and disappointing to me and you too, I know. I saw my doctor on Friday, and she’s going to do a medical procedure on me on Tuesday that she thinks will finish my healing. If that works, I should be back with you sometime later this week.

Mrs. Galvin will continue to be your substitute while I’m out. We are very lucky to have her, and I’m glad it’s her, and not a different substitute for you every day. That would really be hard!

So please be nice to her, do your work, and hopefully I’ll see you in a few more days.

Thanks!

Maestro Chris

Update

My doctor has given me permission to return to work on Monday. I’m very much looking forward to seeing you then!

============================================================

Hello students,

I finally got home from the hospital this afternoon after being there since Monday. I have a big scar held together with 10 staples on my belly, but I can’t show anyone! I’m moving slowly and not eating very much, but I am recovering.

It’s going to be awhile until I’m back with you, but I want to let you know that I miss you all and am looking forward to being back, seeing you all again, and being your teacher for the rest of the year.

Please write to me here or send an email if you want to.

-Maestro Chris

PS – A couple of you had chats that the software considered Spam. I’m not sure why (unless it was because you were YELLING and using ALL CAPS). Anyway, those posts are now approved and somewhere on the chat page.

Homework for October 1-5

Since I will be in the hospital, I will not be updating the web site with homework info this week or next. Please be sure to copy the assignments from the board and write them in your planner. You can always call a friend if you miss something.

  • You will work on the Sept. book report this week. Check the board for the due date.
  • Your Oct. book is an award winner or classic, at or above your reading level, a book you have NOT read before, and with a protagonist of the opposite gender from you, the reader.
  • If I can, I will update you with my status on this web site at the end of the week or next week.

Thanks for being such great students! I’m looking forward to being back with you soon.

– Maestro Chris

Newsletter for September 26

Update: We need more parents to be on the ELAC committee. If you are interested, or just want information, please call Margarita in the office.

Hello! I am Chris Holm, and I teach English Language Arts, Literature, Math, & PE. I am working with Maestra Anna to bring your child a fun, challenging, and rewarding sixth grade. It was good to meet many of you at Back to School Night, and I’m looking forward to working with you this year.

* The school year is well underway, and we are progressing in our studies. We completed chapter 1 in math (ask your child to see the first two tests), and have started chapter 2, learning about using negative numbers. Our next math test will be on Friday.

* In English, we recently learned to make a plot diagram, and have been collecting interesting vocabulary words from reading the Tequila Worm and our grammar exercises. Ask your child to teach you a new word!

* Students are improving their writing skills as shown by the “Caught-Ya” scores from our grammar exercises. I expect to see this excellent work transfer over to book reports and other writing.

* Our first book report will be assigned on Friday Sept. 28. The draft copy is due on Tuesday, and the final version on Friday, written neatly in ink or on the computer.

* The reading book assignment for October is an award winning or classic fiction book with a protagonist that is the opposite gender as the reader. So, if the reader is a boy, the protagonist must be a girl, and vice-versa. Be sure your child reads a minimum of 1/2 hour every day in order to meet the state reading requirement of 750,000 words this year!

* On Monday October 1, I will be out of school for about two weeks to have surgery to finish my treatment for cancer. This will be a good thing for me, and I should be completely healed and be able to continue the rest of the year without any further work interruptions. We are very fortunate to have Ernestine Galvin substitute for me while I am out. I am working closely with her to ensure that the work I would normally do with your children will continue while I am recovering.
